Attr. Pillement/Jacquet bass, ca. 1830
In excellent condition for its age, this is an exceptional, larger French bass is attributed to the collaborative work of Francois Pillement and Joseph Xavier Jacquet, the husband of his granddaughter. Classy, elegant, mature-sounding, audition-quality, and a great investment - we can't say enough about the desirability of this find! Very well set up; ample thickness fingerboard, B extension. Ample overstand, and the ribs taper toward the back in the neck block area - access to thumb position is no issue, which is remarkable for a French bass! Also extraordinary among French basses, this one has all of the highly-desirable powerful, open low end. Very few old repairs; deep gold varnish is beautifully done and in excellent condition. A fine orchestral bass in every regard, and outstanding tone and character in this price range.
